Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Partly a borrowing from Turkish. Partly a borrowing from Arabic. Etymons: Persian ẕikr; Ottoman Turkish ẕikir; Arabic ḏikr.
Etymology: In α. forms partly < Persian ẕikr ( < Arabic ḏikr ), and partly < Ottoman Turkish ẕikir (Turkish zikir ; < Arabic ḏikr ). In β. forms directly < Arabic ḏikr remembrance, act of mentioning < ḏakara to remember, recall, to mention. In later use in South Asia influenced by Urdu ẕikr (also with colloquial pronunciation jikr), < Persian.
Islam.
A form of devotion, associated chiefly with Sufism, in which certain words or phrases, such as the name of God or his attributes, are rhythmically recited; a phrase or phrases recited as part of this devotion.
