Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin diabrosis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin diabrosis (13th cent. in British sources) < Hellenistic Greek διάβρωσις act of eating through, erosion, corrosion < ancient Greek δια- dia- prefix1 + βρῶσις act of eating, in Hellenistic Greek also corrosion (see anabrosis n.).Compare the following earlier quot., which appears to show an isolated borrowing of post-classical Latin diabrosim, accusative singular of diabrosis, in an unclear but different sense (compare likewise Anglo-Norman diabrosim, 13th cent. in translations of Bartholomaeus Anglicus):a1398 J. Trevisa tr. Bartholomaeus Anglicus De Proprietatibus Rerum (BL Add. 27944) (1975) I. vii. xxx. 375 Hete openiþ þe pores and blood woseþ..out, and me seiþ þat it comeþ out by diabrosum, þat is bi swetinge.
Medicine. Now rare.
Erosion or ulceration of or through the wall of a blood vessel; an instance of this.
