A crystalline depsidone, C16H10O5Cl, isolated from the lichen Buellia (= Diploicia) canescens.

1904 Jrnl. Chem. Soc. 86 i. 1020 Diploicin forms sheaves of brown, thick crystals, melts at 225°, is only slightly soluble in alcohol, ether, glacial acetic acid, or benzene, has only a slight tendency to redden litmus paper, and gives no coloration with ferric chloride.
1946 Nature 26 Oct. 590/1 Diploicin..according to Burger and associates, possesses tuberculostatic activity in vitro.
1949 H. W. Florey et al. Antibiotics I. xiii. 574 Barry..found that when diploicin was treated with aqueous alkali it was converted to a sodium salt of the acid (II) which inhibited the growth of Myco. smegmatis..and of Myco. tuberculosis...Although it was not determined whether diploicin was actually antibacterial Barry stated that he was using the substance in a ‘limited animal protection experiment’.
