Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin diffidation-, diffidatio.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin diffidation-, diffidatio defiance, renunciation of allegiance (from 13th cent. in British and continental sources) < diffidat- , past participial stem of diffidare defy v.1 + classical Latin -iō -ion suffix1. Compare Middle French diffidation (1353 in an apparently isolated attestation).
Chiefly (and now only) historical.
The formal renunciation or dissolution of a relationship of amity, trust, allegiance, or fealty; = defiance n. 1.
