Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps ultimately a borrowing from Kongo. Etymon: Kongo ndingi.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps ultimately < Kongo ndingi lamentation, funeral song, although the origin of the second element is unknown.
Jamaican.
A dance of African origin, typically performed in a circle within which couples take turns to execute a sequence of movements characterized by pelvic gyrations and energetic legwork. Also: an event, esp. a funeral ceremony, at which this dance is performed.Traditionally performed on the second to eighth night of nine night funeral observances; cf. nine night n. 1.
