Etymology: Acronym < the initial letters of double (also dual) income no kids + -y suffix6, -ie suffix, on the model of yuppie. The final y is sometimes interpreted as ‘yet’.
slang (originally North American).
Either partner of a usually professional working couple who have no children and are characterized (esp. in marketing) as affluent consumers with few domestic demands on their time and money. Frequently in plural.
