Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French diaspore.
Etymology: < French diaspore ( R. J. Haüy Traité de minéralogie (1801) IV. 358) < Hellenistic Greek διασπορά scattering, dispersion (see diaspora n.). The mineral is so called on account of its strong decrepitation when heated.
Mineralogy.
A mineral consisting of hydrated aluminium oxide, white or pale yellow, grey, or violet in colour, which occurs typically as platy or elongated crystals or in massive or stalactitic forms, and is a constituent of bauxite.Chemical formula: AlO(OH). Crystal system: orthorhombic.

Etymology: < dia- prefix1 + spore n., after German Diaspore (R. Semander 1927, in Nova Acta Regiae Societatis Scientiarum Upsaliensis. Volumen extra ordinem editum 1927 6).
Botany.
A plant or fungal propagule, such as a seed or a spore, that plays a significant role in dispersal.
