Etymology: < medieval Latin dīrectīvus, < dīrect- participial stem of dīrigĕre to direct: see -ive suffix. In French directif, -ive (13–14th cent.), Spanish directivo, Portuguese directivo, Italian direttivo ‘having or giving direction vnto, directiue’ (Florio 1598).
