Etymology: originally disbourse , < Old French desbourser (13th cent. in Hatzfeld & Darmesteter), modern French débourser , in same senses, < des- , dis- prefix 1d + bourse purse. Afterwards assimilated to Latin bursa , as if representing a Latin *disbursāre . Compare deburse v., dispurse v.
