Origin: Probably a word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Probably originally cognate with Old Frisian along (adjective) complete, eternal, alenge (adverb) wholly, Middle Dutch alinc (adjective) whole, complete (Dutch aling ), alinge (adverb), Old Saxon alung (adjective) complete (Middle Low German ālinc (adjective), ālinges (adverb), German regional (Low German: Westphalia) āling , ālink whole, complete, unharmed, (Lower Saxony) alinge completely, continuously), Old High German alang , alanc , (also) alonc , along- , aleng- (adjective) unharmed, complete, perfect, alang (adverb) (Middle High German alanc , alinc (adjective and adverb)), Old Icelandic ǫllungis (adverb) completely; all ultimately < the Germanic base of all adj. + a suffix forming adjectives, perhaps ultimately the same as in young adj.; in English apparently with alteration after Old English eall all adj. (see note) and -inga, -unga, adverbial suffix (see -ing suffix4). Compare allings adv.The West Germanic cognates of the word probably derive from the form of the Germanic base of all adj. without stem-final geminate -ll- (see discussion at all adj.). With the substitution of the stem form with final geminate in Old English compare Old Icelandic ǫllungis . The vowel of the suffix shows a great deal of variation in the individual Germanic languages, suggesting that the word may have been re-formed or altered in several of them. The exact sense of the word in Old English when used as an emphatic or intensifier is not always clear. Moreover, the word seems to be not always clearly distinguished from the β. forms at alway adv. and related words. Compare e.g. the attestation of ealling ‘always’ as a variant reading at quot. OE3, and see alway adv. for a discussion of the etymology of this word. Compare also ealnunga altogether, entirely, utterly (alteration of alling adv. after ealneg , variant of alway adv.):OE Rule St. Benet (Corpus Cambr.) xliii. 68 Ac he gange in, þæt him se tidsancg ealnuncge [OE Corpus Oxf. ealnunge, lOE Faust. ealnunga] ne losige.OE Glosses to Boethius (Corpus Cambr. 214) in W. Obsolete.
Wholly, entirely; in every way, altogether, quite; at all.In Old English apparently also occasionally with temporal reference, esp. when rendering Latin iam in sense ‘now’ (compare quot. OE2).
