In contexts referring to the Jansenist religious controversy in 18th-century France: (a name given to) a person taking a moderate view of miraculous cures and ecstatic behaviour among extreme Jansenists. Only in plural. ΚΠ 1790 Mem. Literary & Philos. Soc. Manch. 3 93 The controversy was carried on so fiercely, as to occasion several divisions among the defenders of the miracles themselves; such as Augustinists, Vaillantists, Secourists, Discernants, Figurists, Melangists, &c. 1822 R. Southey in Q. Rev. 28 35 These persons were called the discernants. 1836 Pop. Encycl. IV. i. 212/1 The Discernants and Melangists, who divided on the question whether the raptures were produced by God or the devil.
