Etymology: < French discernant (1736 or earlier; now historical), use as noun (originally as a derogatory nickname) of present participle of discerner discern v.
Obsolete. historical.
In contexts referring to the Jansenist religious controversy in 18th-century France: (a name given to) a person taking a moderate view of miraculous cures and ecstatic behaviour among extreme Jansenists. Only in plural.
