Etymology: Partly < discipline n. + -al suffix1, and partly (in sense 2) < post-classical Latin disciplinalis concerning learning (6th cent. in Boethius), prescribed by monastic discipline (8th cent. in a British source), instituted for the sake of discipline (12th cent. in a British source), castigatory (from 12th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin disciplīna discipline n. + -ālis -al suffix1. With sense 2 compare Middle French, French disciplinal (1551 or earlier; rare), and also earlier disciplinary adj.
