单词 amelanchier
释义

amelanchiern.

Brit. /ˌaməˈlanʃɪə/, U.S. /ˌæməˈlæŋkiər/
Forms: 1600s– amelanchier, 1800s– amelancier.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Occitan. Etymons: French amélanchier; Occitan amalenquièr.
Etymology: < (i) French amélanchier medlar tree (1549 in Middle Frenchː also 1797 or earlier as amelancier), and its etymon (ii) Occitan amalenquièr, amalenchièr < amalenca , amalencha , denoting the fruit of the tree ( > French amélanche (1721; probably < an unattested derivative < Gaulish aballo- apple: see apple n.)) + -ier -ier suffix. Compare Franco-Provençal (Savoy) amelanquier (1549). See further Französisches etymol. Wörterbuch XXIV. at *aballinca. The Occitan form with medial -m- probably results from association either with post-classical Latin melum apple (see mele n.1), or perhaps with Occitan amela almond (see almond n.).
Any of various shrubs or small trees of the chiefly North American genus Amelanchier (family Rosaceae), frequently cultivated for their clusters of white flowers and fruit, a small purple pome with a sweet flavour. Also (in form Amelanchier): the genus itself. Also called Juneberry, mespilus, serviceberry, saskatoon. In quot. 1693: (perhaps) a variety of sour cherry.Valid publication of the genus name: F. K. Medikus Geschichte der Botanik unsere Zeiten 1793 79, after earlier use as a specific epithet (in Mespilus amelanchier) in Linnaeus Species plantarum 1753 I. 478.
