Etymology: < post-classical Latin amplexion-, amplexio act of embracing (5th cent.); earlier (4th cent.) as a technical grammatical term (compare epiploce n.) < classical Latin amplex- , past participial stem of amplectī amplect v. + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare later amplect v. N.E.D. (1884) enters this under amplexion. In form amplection with remodelling after classical Latin amplectī.
Obsolete.
An act of embracing or clasping (literal and figurative); an embrace.
