Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ampullosus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin ampullosus bombastic, grandiloquent (frequently from 12th cent. in British and continental sources) < classical Latin ampulla , in sense ‘bombast’ (see ampulla n.) + -ōsus -ous suffix.Compare Spanish ampuloso (early 15th cent.), Italian ampolloso (14th cent.).
Obsolete.
Boastful, vainglorious; characterized by the use of pompous or pretentious language.
