1. A bridge or part of a bridge which may be raised or moved so as to prevent passage across it, or to allow passage through the channel which it spans.Drawbridges which are hinged or pivoted so that one end may be lifted upwards are sometimes known as lifting bridges (see lifting-bridge n.), and were originally commonly used over a moat or fosse as part of the fortification of a castle or fort. In later use drawbridge may refer to various specific types of movable bridge such as swing bridges, swivel bridges, or bascule bridges, which are typically large in scale and used over waterways to allow large boats or ships to pass through (see swing-bridge n., swivel-bridge n., bascule-bridge n.).
