Etymology: < German Alloxan (F. Wöhler & J. Liebig 1838, in Ann. der Chem. u. Pharm. 26 256) < all- (in Allantoin allantoin n.) + oxa- (in Oxalsäure oxalic acid: see oxalic adj.) + -an -an suffix. Compare French alloxane (1838; < German).

Biochemistry.

A crystalline, acidic, heterocyclic compound which is formed by oxidation of uric acid.Alloxan is 2,4,5,6-tetraoxypyrimidine; C₄H₂N₂O₄. It has a cytotoxic effect on the beta (insulin-secreting) cells of the pancreas, and is used to induce experimental diabetes.
