Etymology: < French drachme, earlier dragme, in Old French also drame = Provençal dragma, Latin drachma, < Greek δραχμή, an Attic weight and coin, probably originally, ‘as much as one can hold in the hand’, < δράσσεσθαι (-ττ-) to grasp (compare δράγμα).
