Etymology: < German Alloxantin (F. Wöhler & J. Liebig 1838, in Ann. der Chemie u. Pharmacie 26 262), perhaps < all- + ant- + -in (all in Allantoin allantoin n.) with insertion of ox- (in Oxalsäure oxalic acid: see oxalic adj.).In form alloxantine probably after French alloxantine (1838; < German).

A crystalline heterocyclic compound formed by the reaction of alloxan and its reduction product dialuric acid.Alloxantin is a bipyrimidine derivative; C₈H₆N₄O₆.
