Etymology: < scientific Latin alutaceus (1731 or earlier; < post-classical Latin alutaceus (1565 or earlier), alteration (after adjectives in -āceus : see -aceous suffix) of alutacius made of leather (5th cent.; < classical Latin alūta soft leather (perhaps related to alūmen alum n.¹) + post-classical Latin -acius , alteration of classical Latin -āceus : see -aceous suffix) + -ous suffix. Compare earlier alutation n.

Botany and Entomology.

Of a surface: having a texture like that of leather; covered in minute cracks. Formerly also: †having a tan colour (obsolete).
