单词 dragon fruit
释义

dragon fruitn.

Brit. /ˈdraɡ(ə)n fruːt/, U.S. /ˈdræɡ(ə)n ˌfrut/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: dragon n.1, fruit n.
Etymology: < dragon n.1 + fruit n., probably after an equivalent name in a language of South-East Asia, where the fruit is cultivated. The Asian model for the English formation has not been clearly identified. Compare Chinese huǒlóng guǒ , lit. ‘fire dragon fruit’. Several early uses in English make reference to Vietnam, but the Vietnamese name is formed differently: xanh rô`ng (also written thanh long ) < xanh to be green, unripe + rô`ng dragon ( < Chinese lóng : see oolong n.).
The edible fruit of a pitahaya cactus, esp. of the genus Hylocereus, which has leathery red, pink, or yellow skin with green bracts and red or white flesh with black seeds. Also: a cactus producing such a fruit. Cf. strawberry pear n. at strawberry n. Compounds 3a.
