Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Perhaps formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymons: droop v.; *droukne.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps (i) an alteration of droop v., by association with droukening adj. or droukening n. Or perhaps (ii) shortened directly < (the etymon of these two words) the unattested Middle English verb *droukne to become dejected or downcast, with development of sense. Compare slightly earlier drowking n. N.E.D. (1897) gives the pronunciation as (drɑuk) /draʊk/.
Obsolete (English regional (chiefly Northamptonshire) in later use).
intransitive. Esp. of a flower: to droop. Eng. Dial. Dict. (at cited word) records use in Huntingdonshire in 1899.
