Etymology: Probably < a variant of dunnock cow (although this is first attested later: see note) + -er suffix1.Dunnock in the sense ‘cow’ is recorded in various slang glossaries from the early 18th cent. onwards. It is formed < dun adj. + -ock suffix, apparently with reference to the brown colouring found in many breeds of cattle; compare the similarly-formed dunnock n.
