Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Dryopithecus.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Dryopithecus, genus name (E. Lartet 1856, in Comptes rendus hebd. de l'Acad. des Sci. 43 221) < ancient Greek δρῦς tree (see dryad n.) + scientific Latin -o- + -pithecus (fossil) ape (see Pliopithecus n.).

Palaeontology.

Any of several extinct arboreal apes of the genus Dryopithecus, known from Miocene fossil remains and dated to between 25 and 9 million years ago. Also: the genus itself.Thought to include the common ancestor of lesser apes and great apes, Dryopithecus is sometimes taken to incorporate other genera such as Sivapithecus.
