(a) a silver coin of a type issued by various Italian states during the 17th and 18th centuries, initially created to be the same value as the gold ducat (cf. ducat n. 1); (b) any of various similar coins issued elsewhere (esp. in the Netherlands) during the same period and widely used for trade, particularly in areas controlled by the Dutch Republic (cf. rider n. 2).
