单词 | earl marshal |
释义 | Earl Marshaln. 1. In England: a high officer of state, ranking immediately above the Lord High Admiral, and below the Lord High Constable (see constable n. 2b) with whom he formerly presided as judge over the curia militaris or Court of Chivalry. The title was originally ‘marshal’ (see marshal n. 2a), but one of the holders of the dignity became in 1189 Earl of Pembroke, and it has never since been held by a person of lower rank than an earl. The office is now hereditary in the line of the Dukes of Norfolk, its functions being currently confined to the presidency of the College of Arms and the right of appointing its officers, and to certain purely ceremonial duties such as the organization of the coronation, state funerals, and the state opening of Parliament. The equivalent Scottish office of marischal became hereditary in the family of Keith in the 14th cent.; in 1458 the holder of the office was created an earl under the title of Earl Marischal and the last Earl Marischal was attainted in 1716 (see marshal n. 2b).
