Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: egg n., plant n.1
Etymology: < egg n. + plant n.1, so called on account of the shape of its fruit. Compare aubergine n.Compare German Eierpflanze (1783 or earlier; now rare). Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈeggplant.
A popular name for the Solanum esculentum, originally given to the white-fruited variety, but afterwards extended to that which bears the purple fruit or Aubergine.
