Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: abort v., -ment suffix; Latin abortus , aborīrī , -ment suffix.
Etymology: < either abort v. or classical Latin abortus, past participle of aborīrī (see abort v.) + -ment suffix, perhaps as alteration of aborsement n. Compare earlier abortion n.It is not certain if sense 1 represents a use of the same word: elsewhere in the source of quot. 1577, the form aborment is used.
Obsolete.
1. The emptying or expulsion of the contents of the stomach, as by vomiting. rare.
