Etymology: < Japanese amazake (8th cent.; 1603 as amazaqe in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam) < ama- , combining form of amai sweet (see amae n.) + -zake , combining form of sake saké n.²The β. forms are not paralleled in Japanese and apparently show remodelling within English after saké n.² In quot. 1727, the initial s- of the second element is apparently intended to reflect the voiced /z/ of Japanese -zake, according to the German spelling conventions used in the passage translated.
