Etymology: < (i) French amphitryon host of a dinner or feast (1727), and its etymon (ii) Amphitryon, the name of a character who hosts a great dinner, in a comedy of the same name by Molière (compare quot. 1714).In classical mythology Amphitryon (classical Latin Amphitryōn, ancient Greek Ἀμϕιτρύων) was a king of Tiryns. His tragic story gave rise to several dramatic treatments, including a (Latin) comedy by Plautus. A French version of the latter ( J. Rotrou Les deux sosies (1636)), inspired Molière's Amphitryon (1668), which was in turn adapted by Dryden in 1690, with the same title. Compare the following earlier example of extended use of the name of Amphitryon within a translation of Molière's play:1714 J. Ozell tr. Molière Works III. 280 I was not deceiv'd, Gentlemen; this Word ends all the Differences; the true Amphitryon is the Amphitryon where there's a Dinner to be had [Fr.
