单词 effectual
释义

effectualadj.

Brit. /ᵻˈfɛktʃʊəl/, /ᵻˈfɛktʃ(ᵿ)l/, /ᵻˈfɛktjʊəl/, /ᵻˈfɛktjᵿl/, U.S. /əˈfɛk(t)ʃ(əw)əl/, /iˈfɛk(t)ʃ(əw)əl/
Forms: Middle English effectueel, Middle English effectuel, Middle English effectuelx (modifying a plural noun), Middle English–1500s effectuell, late Middle English effectuale, late Middle English effectuele, late Middle English–1600s effectuall, late Middle English– effectual, 1600s effectiall, 1700s– affectual (now nonstandard); also Scottish pre-1700 affectual, pre-1700 affectuall, 1800s effetwal, 1800s– effeckwal, 1900s– effec'wal.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French effectuel; Latin effectualis.
Etymology: < (i) Anglo-Norman effectuel, effectual, effectuell, effectuall (in law) effective, valid (early 14th cent. or earlier), adequate (14th cent. or earlier), actual (early 15th cent. or earlier; compare Middle French effectuel that has a real or actual effect (a1435)), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin effectualis effectual, having an (intended) effect (from 11th cent. in British sources), (in law) valid (from 14th cent. in British sources), (in philosophy) occurring by way of effect (14th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin effectus effect n. + -ālis -al suffix1. Compare Italian effettuale (a1433). Compare effective adj. With sense 3 compare post-classical Latin effectuosus earnest, heartfelt (see effectuous adj.), effectuose earnestly, with sincere feeling (see effectuously adv.), and compare also affectual adj. 1. Compare similarly effectually adv. 3, effectuous adj. 2, effectuously adv. 1, and conversely affectually adv. 1, affectuous adj. 1, affectuously adv. 1, and also affectious adj., affectiously adv. In these senses, since there is a clear semantic overlap between the words in effect- and affect- which apparently arises from synonymy already found in post-classical Latin, a formal division of material is applied, with only forms in e- being included at this entry, and vice versa. In all other senses (which do not overlap with senses of affectual adj.), a semantic distinction is applied, as in all other effect- and affect- words, and hence forms in a- are sometimes found (compare general note at effect n.). In form effectiall apparently by association with words in -ial suffix.
