Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements; probably modelled on a Greek lexical item. Perhaps also partly a borrowing from French. Perhaps also partly a borrowing from German. Etymons: Amazon n., -o- connective, Latin -machia; Greek -μάχιά; French Amazonomachie; German Amazonomachie.
Etymology: < Amazon n. + -o- connective + either classical Latin -machia or its etymon ancient Greek -μάχιά (see -machy comb. form), probably after Greek Ἀμαζονομαχία battle involving Amazons (in scholia (medieval Greek or earlier) on Iliad 2. 219), either directly or via French Amazonomachie (1835 or earlier), German Amazonomachie (1841 or earlier). Compare earlier gigantomachy n. and later Amazonomachy n.
In ancient Greek art: a representation on a frieze, vase, etc., of one of various mythical battles involving the Amazons; (also) a battle of this kind; = Amazonomachy n.
