Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French empire; Latin empyreum, caelum empyreum.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French empire (1328–42 in ciel empire the highest sphere of heaven), empirée (late 14th cent. in cieulx empirées , plural), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin empyreum, empireum (in caelum empyreum, caelum empireum the highest heaven (frequently from 13th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin caelum heaven (see celestial adj.) + post-classical Latin empyreum , neuter of empyreus (see empyreal adj.). Compare empyreum n.1The form empiry in quot. a1425 indicates trisyllabic pronunciation, and may reflect alteration of disyllabic forms for reasons of rhyme and metre after adjectives in -y suffix1, although compare Middle French empirée.
Obsolete.
