Etymology: < post-classical Latin alpestris mountainous (see alpestral adj.) + -ine suffix¹. Compare earlier alpestral adj., alpestrious adj. Compare also lacustrine adj.

Chiefly Botany. Now rare.

Originally: of or characteristic of mountains, esp. the Alps (cf. alpestrious adj.). In later use: (spec.) designating a zone of vegetation growing below the tree line in a mountainous habitat; of or characteristic of this zone. Cf. subalpine adj. 2.
