Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French ameser, ameisier.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman ameser, ameiser, (with change of conjugation) ameisier, Middle French (with change of conjugation) amaisir, amaisier to reconcile (people), to make peace with (a person), (reflexive) to reconcile oneself to (a person) (both second half of the 12th cent. in Old French), to calm, pacify, appease (a person or thing) (second half of the 12th cent.), further etymology uncertain and disputed. Compare slightly earlier mese v., and also slightly earlier emmoised adj.
Chiefly Scottish. Obsolete.
