Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a Dutch lexical item. Etymons: Greek ἄμετρος , -opia comb. form.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ἄμετρος without measure, without metre (see ametry n.) + -opia comb. form, after Dutch ametropie ( F. C. Donders Ametropie en hare gevolgen (1860), the source reviewed in quot. 1860).
Ophthalmology.
Abnormality of the refraction of the eye, resulting in an inability to focus light precisely on the retina. Contrasted with emmetropia n.Myopia (short- or near-sightedness), hyperopia or hypermetropia (long- or far-sightedness), and astigmatism are types of ametropia.

1923 Brit. Med. Jrnl. 27 Jan. 171/2 During the last two years I have seen twelve children suffering from nystagmus. Eleven of these children had decided degrees of ametropia.
