Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin epichīrēma; Greek ἐπιχείρημα.
Etymology: < (i) classical Latin epichīrēma (also epichērēma) syllogistic form of argument in which the premises themselves were often regarded as requiring proof, and its etymon (ii) ancient Greek ἐπιχείρημα attempt, undertaking, (in logic) attempted or dialectical proof < ἐπιχειρεῖν to undertake ( < ἐπι- epi- prefix + χείρ hand: see cheiro- comb. form) + -μα (see -oma comb. form).
Logic and Rhetoric.
(a) A deductive argument in which some of the supporting reasons are stated briefly or incompletely. (b) A syllogism including proofs of one or both of the premises.The uses in English derive from various interpretations of Aristotle (see Topics viii. xi), and occur mainly in contexts where the meaning intended is either vague or explicitly explained.
