Etymology: < Assamese eriya, adjective < era the castor-oil plant. N.E.D. (1891) enters this under the headword eria and gives the pronunciation as (īə·riă) /ˈɪərɪə/.
In eri silk: (see quot. 1881); eri worm: the silkworm that produces this silk, Attacus ricini. Also eri cocoon, eri moth.
