Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French erotylos; Latin erotylos.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French, French erotylos (1584 in the passage translated in quot. 1601), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin erotylos (e.g. in 16th-cent. editions of Pliny), variant of classical Latin erōtylus precious stone (Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek ἐρωτύλος darling, sweetheart < ἐρωτ- , ἔρως Eros n. + -ύλος, suffix forming diminutives.The semantic motivation of the name is unclear; the suggestion in quot. 1879 is merely speculative.
Ancient Greek History. Obsolete.
A rough, figured stone, used esp. in divination; = amphicome n.

1601 P. Holland tr. Pliny Hist. World II. xxxvii. x. 626 Erotylos [Fr. Erotylos; L. erotylus], which some call Amphicome, others Hieromnemon, is commended much by Democritus, for sundrie experiments in prophesying and foretelling fortunes.
1816 Encycl. Perthensis (ed. 2) I. 679/1 A kind of figured stone, of a roundish shape, but rugged, and beset with eminences, celebrated on account of its use in divination. This stone is also called Erotylos.
1879 Potter's Amer. Monthly Apr. 269/2 There was a stone known to the ancients, especially to the Greeks, called the amphicome, and also erotylos, on account of its power to excite love.
