Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin epistatēs; Greek ἐπιστάτης.
Etymology: < (i) classical Latin epistatēs overseer, steward, supervisor, and its etymon (ii) ancient Greek ἐπιστάτης chief, commander, (in Athens) president of the assembly, in Hellenistic Greek also overseer, superintendent < ἐπί- epi- prefix + -στάτης (see -stat comb. form1), after ἐϕιστάναι to set over.
An overseer, a superintendent; (Ancient Greek History) an official having a supervisory role in the Athenian Council and Assembly.
