Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin etheca.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin etheca (Vulgate: Ezekiel 41:15–16; also ektheta, which is now the preferred reading) < Hebrew 'attīq (Ezekiel 41:16, 42:3, 42:5; also in Ezekiel 41:15 as (Ketib) 'attūq), in uncertain sense (perhaps ‘balcony’ or ‘ledge’), further etymology uncertain and disputed.The Vulgate translates the Hebrew word by classical Latin porticus colonnade, arcade, porch (see porticus n.) in all of its occurrences in Ezechiel 42; the King James Bible translates it by gallery n.
Obsolete. rare.
Perhaps: a gallery, a porch.
