Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin aethereus , -an suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin aethereus (see ethereal adj.) + -an suffix. Compare Middle French ethereen , French (now rare) etheréen (noun) inhabitant of the ethereal regions (1506), (adjective) of or relating to the sky (1583). Compare earlier ethereal adj.With the β. forms, compare -ian suffix, and also classical Latin aetherius (see ethereal adj.), and Old French, Middle French etherien (adjective) of or relating to the sky (1310 in an isolated attestation, subsequently from late 16th cent.), French †aetherien (noun) inhabitant of the ethereal regions (1601 in the passage translated in quot. ?1608).
