Etymology: < ethno- comb. form + -geny comb. form, originally after French ethnogénie (1834 or earlier in sense ‘branch of ethnology concerned with the origin of nations or distinct ethnic groups’; 1861 in sense ‘formation or emergence of a new nation or a distinct ethnic group within a larger community, A. C. Moreau de Jonnès Ethnogénie caucasienne 13).
