单词 exorcism
释义

exorcismn.

/ˈɛksəsɪz(ə)m//ˈɛksɔːsɪz(ə)m//ɛɡˈzɔːsɪz(ə)m/
Forms: Middle English–1600s exorcisme, (Middle English exorsism, 1500s exorcysme, exorcyme), Middle English– exorcism.
Etymology: < late Latin exorcismus, < Ecclesiastical Greek ἐξορκισμός , < ἐξορκίζειν : see exorcize v. Compare French exorcisme. In this and the related words Johnson and nearly all later dictionaries mark the stress on the first syllable; but the second pronunciation is often heard, especially in exorcize, which otherwise is liable to confusion with exercise.
