Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin anagogia; Greek ἀναγωγία.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin anagogia symbolism, mystical interpretation (from 12th cent. in British sources, from 13th cent. in continental sources) and its etymon (ii) Byzantine Greek ἀναγωγία action of fact of lifting up < ancient Greek ἀναγωγός that brings up, in Byzantine Greek also uplifting the soul, elevating ( < ἀνα- ana- prefix + αγωγός leading, eliciting: see agogic adj.1) + -ία -y suffix3. Compare earlier anagogic adj. and later anagoge n.Compare Middle French, French anagogie (1560), Catalan anagogia (14th cent.), Spanish anagogía (late 15th cent.), Portuguese anagogia (15th cent. as anagogē), Italian anagogia (late 14th cent.).
