Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin analepsis; Greek ἀνάληψις.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin analepsis repetition (a1619) and its etymon ancient Greek ἀνάληψις (in Hellenistic Greek also ἀνάλημψις ) action of taking up or back, recovery from illness, suspension in a sling, in Hellenistic Greek also ascension (New Testament), repetition < ἀνά- ana- prefix + -ληψις -lepsy comb. form, after ἀναλαμβάνειν to take up, recover (see analemma n.). Compare French analepsie recovery from illness (1751). Compare analepsy n.In sense 4 probably after French analepse ( G. Genette Figures III (1972) 82; compare quot. 1976 at sense 4); compare analeptic adj. 2.
