单词 evening primrose
释义

evening primrosen.

Brit. /ˌiːvnɪŋ ˈprɪmrəʊz/, U.S. /ˌiv(ə)nɪŋ ˈprɪmˌroʊz/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: evening n.1, primrose n.
Etymology: < evening n.1 + primrose n., with allusion to the fact that the flowers of this plant open in the evening.
Originally: the plant Oenothera biennis, native to North America and widely grown elsewhere, which has spikes of yellow flowers which open in the evening. In later use more generally: any plant of the genus Oenothera, comprising annual, biennial, or perennial herbaceous plants native to temperate America, having yellow, white, or pinkish flowers which open either in the evening or in the morning. Also: a flower of any of these plants. Cf. oenothera n. 2.Earlier names for these plants include tree primrose and night primrose. The species with flowers that open in the morning are often called sundrop.
