单词 eyas
释义

eyasn.

Brit. /ˈʌɪəs/, U.S. /ˈaɪəs/
Forms: Middle English eyes, 1500s–1600s yas, 1500s–1800s eyess(e, 1600s eyasse, ( eyeass, iiaes), 1600s– eyas.
Etymology: Altered form of nyas n., < French niais (= Provençal nizaic , Italian nidiace ) < Latin *nīd(i)āc-em , < nīdus nest. The dropping of initial n shows metanalysis; the spelling eyas was suggested by popular association with Middle English ey egg n. and eyrie n.; also with eye n.3 (see quots.).
A young hawk taken from the nest for the purpose of training, or one whose training is incomplete.
