Etymology: < fare v.1 + water n., after German Fahrwasser navigable channel (of a waterway) (mid 16th cent. or earlier), with remodelling of the first element after fair adj. Compare earlier fairway n. and see discussion at that entry.
Now rare.
Esp. in Germany or in German-speaking contexts: a navigable channel, esp. in a river, or in or near a harbour or port.
