Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the second syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. angustirostrate Brit. /aŋˌɡʌstᵻˈrɒstrət/, /aŋˌɡʌstᵻˈrɒstreɪt/, U.S. /æŋˌɡəstəˈrɔˌstreɪt/, /æŋˌɡəstəˈrɑˌstreɪt/.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin angusti-.
Etymology: < classical Latin angusti- (in e.g. angusticlāvius having or wearing a narrow purple band) < angustus narrow (see angust adj.) + -i- -i- connective.With angustifoliate and angustifolious compare post-classical Latin angustifolius narrow-leaved (1518 or earlier), scientific Latin angustifolius (frequently from 1753 as a specific epithet in botany). With angustirostrate compare scientific Latin angustirostris (from 1818 as a specific name in zoology).

Forming adjectives with the sense ‘narrowly ——’, as angustifoliate, angustifolious, angustirostrate, angustiseptate, etc.Frequently contrasted with adjectives in lati-.
